The Union law ministry has cleared for appointment 11 new judges to the high courts in Delhi, Gujarat and Calcutta.

While Delhi and Gujarat would have four new judges each, Calcutta will have three new judges.

Those appointed to Calcutta High Court are advocates Bibek Chaudhuri, Madhumati Mitra and Subhasis Dasgupta.

Advocates Jyoti Singh, Prateek Jain, Anip Jairam Bhambani and Sanjeev Narula have been appointed as judges of Delhi High Court.

For Gujarat, advocates Umesh Amritlal Trivedi, Ajay Kumar Chandulal Rao, Vireshkumar Bhavachand Bhai Mayani and Ashutosh Puskerray Thaker have been appointed as judges.

As of October 1, 2018, the total number of vacancies in the 24 high courts across the country was 434 against a sanctioned strength of 1,079 judges.

Allahabad High Court, which has the highest sanctioned strength of 160 judges, has 71 vacancies.

The number of vacancies at Calcutta High Court was 37, against a sanctioned strength of 72 judges, according to the October 1 data.

Punjab and Haryana had 35 vacancies against a sanctioned strength of 85 judges.

Telangana and Andhra Pradesh High Court has 32 vacancies against a sanctioned strength of 61 judges.

The Supreme Court has six vacancies against a sanctioned strength of 31 judges, including the Chief Justice of India.
