The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Monday said all central universities funded by it, including the Delhi University, will have to use the new Common University Entrance Test (CUET) scores to admit students to undergraduate programmes, reports ndtv.com
This test is mandatory and the first one will be held in the first week of July.
A computerised examination, the CUET will be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The application window for the text will open in the first week of April and an announcement on the test pattern is expected on Tuesday.
According to UGC chairman M Jagadesh Kumar, admission to undergraduate courses in central universities will be based only on the CUET score. Class 12 Board exam marks will not carry any weightage. The university can use the Board marks as eligibility criteria for the test, he said.
The UGC chairperson said "one nation, one entrance test" will be a great relief for students across the country. "As a result of this, students need not have to write different kinds of entrance tests," he said.
The introduction of CUET makes Class 12 Board examination performance largely redundant. It will also do away with the trend of steep cutoff marks in Delhi University, where some colleges have eligibility criteria of 100 per cent marks in the first list to admit students.
