Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his deputy Tejashwi Yadav on Wednesday met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge here in the presence of Rahul Gandhi.
The meeting at Kharge's residence comes amid talks of Opposition unity ahead of the 2024 general elections as reported by PTI.
Nitish arrived at Delhi on Tuesday and was expected to meet a slew of Opposition leaders during his stay in the national capital. He first met his Bihar ally, RJD president Lalu Prasad. Tejashwi Yadav was also in Delhi as he appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday for questioning in a money laundering case linked to the alleged land-for-jobs scam.
According to media reports, Nitish had received a call from Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge after which the trip was planned. The Bihar Chief Minister is looking to serve as a bridge between the Congress and other opposition parties in an attempt towards forging Opposition unity.
Nitish had gone to Delhi in September last year as well when he met leaders such as Sharad Pawar, Arvind Kejriwal, D Raja, Sitaram Yechuri and Akhilesh Yadav.
A "united front" would be able to reduce the BJP to less than 100 seats”, Nitish had said in February while speaking at the 11th general convention of the CPI(ML-L) which has extended outside support to the Kumar-led Mahagathbandhan government.
Kharge has spoken to several opposition leaders recently in an attempt to forging unity among like-minded parties to take on the BJP.
He has reached out to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin and former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray and may have a meeting with top opposition leaders in the coming weeks.
