Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal United on Saturday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to call an emergency meeting of the National Democratic Alliance to discuss the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the National Register of Citizens.

The JDU is the largest constituent of the NDA after the BJP. The demand for an emergency meeting of the coalition members comes just a day after Nitish declared that the NRC would not be rolled out in Bihar.

Another NDA member, the Lok Janshakti Party, also opposed the implementation of the NRC in the country.

“The Shiromani Akali Dal, Asom Gana Parishad, LJP, JDU — all have rejected the NRC. Only the BJP people are saying that they will implement the NRC. This has led to confusion in the NDA. So the Prime Minister should take the initiative, get everybody together to a meeting and find a way out,” JDU secretary-general K.C. Tyagi told The Telegraph.

Tyagi added that after discussions with the NDA constituents, a move should be made to arrive at a consensus.

“The Opposition and the protesters should also be contacted and a solution found. The Prime Minister may give an assurance to the people of the country that the NRC will not be implemented here,” Tyagi added.

The JDU secretary-general asserted that his party was determined to oppose any move to club the amended citizenship law and the NRC. “The NRC is the main problem,” he added.

Another senior JDU leader told this newspaper on the condition of anonymity that “though the BJP has a majority in the Lok Sabha, it has become a minority within the NDA as far as the act and the NRC are concerned”.
