Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday avoided commenting on the Congress’s announcement in the Karnataka election manifesto about banning the Bajrang Dal, but asserted that he and leaders of all like-minded parties will sit together to decide a suitable policy for the country and implement it if they get a majority in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
He also accused the BJP of trying to change the history of the country, and its leaders making disparaging remarks against migrant labourers.
“We are currently making efforts to bring together like-minded parties. When the talks are over and the parties sit together, we will decide what should be the policy for the entire country and what work should be done if we get a majority in the elections,” Nitish said.
“This is the reason that I do not speak anything right now. I have no interest in any post. I just want to unite everybody. The country will stay secure if we come together. They (read BJP) are changing the entire history of the country. What else is happening? No work is happening (in the country),” the chief minister added.
Nitish was speaking to media persons on the sidelines of a state government function in Patna to mark the birth anniversary of Bihar’s first premier Muhammad Yunus.
A leader of Nitish’s Janata Dal United (JDU) and Nalanda MP Kaushalendra Kumar on Wednesday advocated a ban on the Bajrang Dal in Bihar. He averred that the organisation should be banned because it mobilised people in the name of lord Ram, which led to violent incidents because of misunderstandings.
Speaking at Biharsharif, the headquarters of Nalanda district, Kaushalendra demanded that a limit should be fixed for the participants in religious processions.
He also supported the statements of Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel about the need to ban the Bajrang Dal.
Biharsharif and Sasaram towns were ravaged by communal violence that broke out in the aftermath of Ram Navami processions on March 30 and 31 and continued for several days.
At least one person was killed and many were injured in it, apart from the destruction of property belonging to the two communities.
Nitish also slammed Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant for holding migrant workers from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh responsible for around 90 per cent of crimes in his state.
“When this news came, all leaders of Bihar right from deputy chief minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav to other parties condemned it. One should not speak such things or make disparaging comments about others,” Nitish said.
Asked about his impending visit to Bhubaneswar to meet his Odisha counterpart Naveen Patnaik, Nitish said that people would come to know about his scheduled visits and meetings in a few days.
He also fondly remembered the tenure of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and said that the present dispensation of the BJP was not even remembering the works done during his tenure.
“There was no communal strife during Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s tenure. The Opposition also used to be happy with him. Everybody used to work together,” Nitish said.
