As Nirmala Sitharaman began her maiden Budget speech in the Lok Sabha earlier today, Twitter exploded with jokes and memes on her announcements. Sitharaman, who began her discourse acknowledging the huge turnout in the recent Lok Sabha elections, said voters chose to build a New India with a focus on economic growth and national security. She added that India was en route to become a $3-trillion economy this year, saying that $1 trillion was added in the past five years.
The Indian Twitter community were watching with rapt attention, undoubtedly because the Budget was going to affect it in the coming year.
Tweeple also warned others on the social media platform, telling them to avoid listening to “fake experts”.

Especially upset with the Budget was the middle class, which did not get any tax cuts. This too created a flutter on Twitter.

As the country’s first full-time woman finance minister began her speech, going deeper into financial issues and explaining parts of the Budget, a confused Twitterati took comfort in what they do best — making memes.

The hike in petrol and diesel prices also got the goat of some people. The budget proposed that the fuels be costlier by Rs 2 a litre. “I propose to increase special additional excise duty and road and infrastructure cess each by one rupee a litre on petrol and diesel,” the finance minister said. Domestic fuel prices have barely changed this year.

“Phata Poster Nikla Zero”- BIG ZERO to #UnionBudget2019 as middle class & farmers become “target of extortion” of revenue by unjustified cess on petrol/diesel after earning 13Lac Crore+ in last 5 years - Voters expecting roses have been instead stabbed in back by BJP Govt
