The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has launched a thorough probe into three cases related to the fresh spate of violence in Manipur, the agency said on Tuesday.
The federal agency has re-registered three cases afresh under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Arms Act and the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act after the Union home ministry handed over the probe to the NIA “considering the gravity of the offences amid escalating violence in the strife-torn state and with a view to unearth the larger conspiracy behind the brutal attacks”.
The first case is related to the torching of several houses on November 11 under the Borobekra police station in Jiribam district in which two civilians were killed. Later, the "militants" had also abducted and murdered six persons — women and kids belonging to the same family.
“The gory incident took place on November 11 when some unknown armed militants fired towards Borobekra police station, as well as some houses and shops located at Jakuradhor Karong, and also set ablaze the latter. The police and CRPF personnel of Borobekra PS retaliated, leading to heavy exchange of fire. Subsequent search operations led to the recovery of two dead bodies inside the burnt houses,” the NIA said in a statement on Tuesday.
The second case in which the NIA has initiated a probe is connected with the November 11 attack on a CRPF post at Jakuradhor Karong and the Borobekra police station nearby by "armed militants". A CRPF constable suffered bullet injuries and was evacuated to Silchar for treatment. During a search by the security forces, the bodies of unidentified armed militants, along with arms and ammunition, were recovered.
The third case relates to the murder of a woman at Jiribam by armed militants. The incident took place on November 7 when the 31-year-old Jiribam resident was raped and burnt alive.
“The NIA teams visited the spots on November 22 and started a probe. The process of handing over case documents from the local police to the NIA is currently underway,” the agency said.
