The hashtag #MyLeaderRahulGandhi started trending on Twitter this morning, making many wonder why many Congress activists had started requesting Rahul Gandhi on Twitter to remain the party president.
When asked why so many Congress workers had taken to Twitter in his support today, AICC secretary in-charge of communications, Pranav Jha, said today’s Twitter trend perhaps had something to do with a demonstration outside the leader’s residence at 12, Tughlak Lane.
“I think the enormous support on social media has come in solidarity with the Youth Congress member’s demonstration outside Rahul Gandhiji’s residence to urge him to not step down from the Congress chief's post,” Jha said.
Holding party flags and posters that said: 'Nation needs you Rahul Gandhi.'
Some rubbished the Twitter campaign as paid publicity of the Congress.
On the other hand, a few were seen posting memes and jokes on #MyLeaderRahulGandhi.
Following this, various Twitter handles of the Congress and Youth Congress were seen lauding the leader in their posts throughout the day.
The BJP’s Delhi unit spokesperson, Tajinder Singh Bagga, also tweeted, using the hashtag, but with tongue firmly in cheek.
Rahul offered to quit as the party chief during a CWC meet on May 25, which was called to analyse the party's poor performance in the general elections.
In the weeks after that meeting, Rahul repeatedly ruled out every possibility of rethinking on his resignation, but most Congress leaders have been reluctant to accept anyone else as party president.
