Priyanka offered a peek into the personal life of Rahul while addressing an election rally in Wayanad, from where the Congress president is contesting the Lok Sabha elections.

The sister recounted: “One day I went to his house and saw him cleaning his cupboard. I asked him ‘what are you doing?’ He said ‘I am reducing everything I have to just 10 things’. And ever since, he neither had more than that nor does he need more than that.”

Priyanka attributed such patience to the “tremendous inner work” Rahul has done to understand himself.

“It is not much known that he has read most of the religious texts of Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism and Christianity. And he understands the Vedas, the Upanishads and Shaivism in (such) great depth that I doubt very much, those who claim to be the political custodians of Hinduism understand,” Priyanka said, adding that her brother didn’t like these aspects to be discussed in public.

“He is a Black Belt in Aikido (a Japanese martial art), a qualified pilot, an instructor-level free diver…. He did mountaineering courses with the ITBP when he was young,” Priyanka said.

She also spoke about the emotional upheaval she and Rahul went through when their father, Rajiv Gandhi, was assassinated, seven years after their grandmother Indira Gandhi was killed by her own bodyguards. “My brother and I were shattered. But even in that moment he said to me that he had no hatred in his heart,” Priyanka said.

She recalled Rahul’s younger days. “He finished his education at Cambridge University in the UK and got himself a job (and) he worked anonymously, without the crutches, connections or the name of his family, until he came to India in 2004 and stood for elections in Amethi (Uttar Pradesh),” Priyanka said.

She assured the people that Rahul was not a person who would misuse anyone and cited an incident when she had suggested that the Congress ideology be propagated through a million members of self-help groups in Amethi.

“He said to me, ‘no Priyanka, we are not helping these ladies so that they should be indoctrinated with our views. We are empowering them so that they should have views of their own.’ And he did not let me do it,” she said to loud cheers from the audience.

Priyanka struck a chord with the local audience by speaking about Rahul’s love for football, a passion shared by most Malayalis.

She narrated how Rahul had handled a mid-flight emergency during the Karnataka elections last year. “He (Rahul’s secretary) said ‘Didi, we were all praying and terrified but he (Rahul) was standing near the cockpit with the pilots, helping them to handle the crisis and he was completely calm,” Priyanka said.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation had later said that the plane was 20 seconds from crashing and blamed the pilots of the 10-seater aircraft that had plunged en route to Hubli on April 26, 2018.
