Unidentified men on Tuesday defaced the nameplate at the residence of an Aam Aadmi Party MP who had released documents to the media alleging fraud in the purchase of land for construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya.
In his complaint to police, AAP Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh said that a “murderous attack” was attempted on him at his North Avenue residence at the behest of unnamed BJP members, at noon.
“I was speaking to some people on my lawn when the assailants started raising slogans such as ‘Shoot Sanjay Singh’ and ‘Death to Sanjay Singh’, while advancing towards the door, attempting to break the nameplate and blacken it. The people with me caught two of the attackers and handed them over to North Avenue police station nearby,” Singh’s complaint said.
He said after he revealed the fraud and named Ayodhya mayor Rishikesh Upadhyay of the BJP, “… many BJP leaders and IT cell members gave inflammatory statements against me and incited people to make an attempt on my life”.
Deputy commissioner of police, New Delhi, Deepak Yadav tweeted, “An attempt was made to deface the name plate at the residence of Shri Sanjay Singh, MP. Two persons have been detained in this regard. No physical injury has been caused to any one. Further investigation is on.”
Champat Rai, general secretary of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, had dismissed the allegations of a scam as “misleading”.
