Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Friday submitted a notice to initiate privilege proceedings in the Rajya Sabha against education minister Dharmendra Pradhan for “misrepresentation of facts” in the House on the alleged dropping of the Preamble to the Constitution from some NCERT textbooks.
Ramesh submitted the notice to chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar two days after Pradhan told the Rajya Sabha that the Preamble was printed in the new textbooks for Class VI published by the NCERT.
Ramesh attached copies of pages of books such as Honeysuckle and Looking Around, which had the Preamble, and their replacements Poorvi and Our Wondrous World, which do not.
The omission of the Preamble from textbooks is a grave affront to the very concept of generating awareness among youths about the spirit of the Constitution, Ramesh argued. He said misrepresentation of facts in the House constituted a breach of privilege.
