A morning walk turned fatal for two women when a speeding dumper truck crushed them to death and left two others seriously injured in Bihar's Bhagalpur district on Tuesday.
The incident occurred near Peer Dargah under Sultanganj police station, around 215km east of Patna. A group of four women was taking a morning walk around 5am along the National Highway (NH) - 80, when the truck hit them from behind.
Two of the victims identified as Saraswati Devi and Savita Devi died on the spot, while two others — Pooja Devi and Rupa Kumari — were badly injured. The locals rushed them to the nearby government hospital for treatment. Their condition is stated to be serious.
Meanwhile, the driver fled with the truck, but the police chased and nabbed him.
The angry locals kept the dead bodies on NH-80 and blocked it for a couple of hours demanding compensation for the families of the deceased women. They also sought a crackdown on speeding vehicles.
“We have arrested the driver Upendra Yadav and seized the truck. An FIR has been registered. The dead bodies have been sent for post-mortem. We persuaded the people blocking the traffic on the national highway to clear the obstructions,” Sultanganj station house officer (SHO) Priya Ranjan told The Telegraph.
