Police have arrested the mother of a pupil and the head teacher of a school in Bidar where a skit enacted by the students against the new citizenship regime has led to a sedition case.

Anujaminsa, 26, and teacher Fareeda Begum, 52, were arrested late on Thursday night and slapped with sedition charges.

Abdul Qadeer, director of the Shaheen Primary and High School, had said that Anujaminsa had scripted the skit and trained the students, including her daughter.

He had also accused Begum, who is in charge of the primary classes, of failing to screen the skit before it was staged on January 21.

The two women have been booked under penal code sections 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 505-2 (statements creating or promoting enmity, hatred or ill will between people), 153A (promoting or attempting to promote disharmony), 34 (common intent) and 124A (sedition).

The arrests came on a complaint from Neelesh Rakshal, a local man who describes himself as a “farmer and social worker”.

The skit revolved around common people’s anxiety about how they would obtain the documents required to prove they are citizens of India. One of the children who acted in the skit could be heard saying: “The government is asking Muslims to leave India.”

Another child then asked a third child, who was playing her mother: “Amma, (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi is asking us to show documents of our father and grandfather. If not, he is telling us to leave the country.”

What mainly led to the controversy was the response from the girl playing mother: “If anyone asks for documents, hit them with slippers.”

A district court has remanded the arrested women in 14 days’ judicial custody. Sources said the women’s interim bail pleas would be moved on Saturday.

The Bidar police have seized the security camera footage to facilitate their probe. The cops have already attracted controversy by questioning the children who acted in the skit.

No one from the school management could be contacted for comments as their phones were out of reach.
