Modi targets Manmohan on 'Bharat Mata ki Jai'

‘Peculiar foul smell’: On Tuesday, the Prime Minister lectured BJP MPs about the importance of “peace, unity and harmony” without making any reference to the Delhi riots that have so far killed 48 people.

Modi sought to take a dig at former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, saying some people get a “foul smell” from the chant “Bharat Mata ki Jai”.

Manmohan had recently said the slogan “Bharat Mata ki Jai” was being misused to create a “militant and purely emotional” idea of India that excludes millions of its citizens. Modi did not name Manmohan but said it was “painful” some people get “ajeeb si boo (peculiar kind of foul smell)” from the patriotic slogan.
