Veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar has expressed shock at his name appearing in the credits of the trailer of the film PM Narendra Modi, saying he did not write any songs for the film.
“Am shocked to find my name on the poster of this film. Have not written any songs for it,” Akhtar, a trenchant critic of the Right wing, tweeted on Friday evening, sharing a screenshot of the credits.
Akhtar’s name appears alongside those of lyricists Prasoon Joshi, Sameer, Abhendra Kumar Upadhyay, Sardaraa, Parry G and Lavraj.
Akhtar’s tweet has been retweeted by his wife, actress Shabana Azmi, and son, actor-director Farhan Akhtar.
The lyricist’s tweet evoked sharp criticism from BJP backers, with some pointing out that he was “not the only Javed Akhtar” in the world. At least one of those who have put forth this logic has prefaced his Twitter handle with “Chowkidar” in response to Modi’s call. Some called him “anti-national”. Akhtar received support, too, from many.
PM Narendra Modi, set to release on April 5, features Vivek Oberoi in the title role. The biopic is directed by Omung Kumar, who has earlier made films on the lives of boxer Mary Kom and Sarabjit Singh, who was sentenced to death in Pakistan after being convicted of terrorism and espionage.
None from Legend Studios, which has produced PM Narendra Modi, was available for comment on lyricist Akhtar’s claim.
