A young woman and a man from different religions were allegedly manhandled and heckled by a mob when they come out of a hotel in Indore in Madhya Pradesh and two persons who came to the couple's rescue received stab wounds, a police official said on Friday.
The incident, a video of which went viral on social media, took place on Thursday night in the city and two persons from the 20-odd strong mob have been arrested, he said.
When the woman and man came out of the hotel after having food, the mob chased and surrounded them and questioned the woman about why she was in the company of a man from a different faith, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajesh Raghuvanshi said.
"The woman told them she had come to have dinner with the man after informing her parents. She also objected to their misbehaviour. Meanwhile, two persons who came to the couple's rescue were injured after they were stabbed with a knife by someone from the crowd," the Additional DCP said.
A case under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered and seven accused have been identified so far, Tukoganj police station in charge Kamlesh Sharma said.
Two of the accused, in the 23-26 age group, have been arrested, while efforts to identify and nab the remaining 20-odd persons who formed the mob were underway, Sharma said.
MP Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan directed police to take strict action against those involved in harassing the couple.
