The fatal accident in which a senior citizen’s hand got stuck in a Metro train at Park Street station in July “occurred due to the carelessness of the passenger”, a probe has said.

The report of the commissioner of railway safety (Metro circle), who had probed the July 13 accident in which Sajal Kumar Kanjilal, 66, died, arrived at the Metro headquarters in Calcutta last week.

“Having carefully considered all the evidences tendered… the unusual occurrence in Metro Railway… occurred due to the carelessness of the passenger,” says section 6.1 of the 40-page report.

Kanjilal had made a last-moment attempt to board the train at Park Street station and had a part of his hand stuck between the leaves of the first door of the third coach from the front. He was found dead on the tracks in the tunnel a few seconds later.

Metro officials had said Kanjilal’s fingers, not his palm, were stuck between the flaps. The fingers were within the tolerance limit, which allows a train to run despite the gap between the leaves of a door, they had said.

J.K. Garg, the commissioner of railway safety (Metro circle) who reports to the directorate-general of civil aviation, had inspected the rake at Tollygunge station during his probe. Several passengers had on July 13 said they saw the incident but no one turned up to record a statement in front of Garg.
