Massive protests involving hundreds of students broke out at a private university on the Ludhiana-Chandigarh highway on Sunday after a woman allegedly leaked objectionable videos of other female students on the internet, reports ndtv.com.
A case has been registered against the accused girl under Sections 354 c of IPC and IT act at the Gharuan police post.
According to some reports, some of the students whose videos got leaked attempted suicide at the campus. An investigation has been launched into the case. The accused is a first-year MBA student, police said.
According to police sources, preliminary investigation suggests that the girl was sharing videos and photos of her own with her boyfriend but others suspected her of sharing their pictures.
The female student, who leaked the videos, had also allegedly demanded money in exchange for keeping the videos off the internet, the report said.
Punjab education minister Harjot Singh Bains urged the protesting students to remain calm. "It’s a very sensitive matter & relates to dignity of our sisters & daughters. We all including media should be very very cautious, it is also test of ours now as a society," he tweeted.
Delhi chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal condemned the video leak of the students of Chandigarh University and assured the students that all culprits will get the harshest punishment.
Terming the incident as serious and shameful, Kejriwal praised the courage of the girl whose videos have allegedly been leaked. "We are with you. All must act with patience," Kejriwal tweeted.
Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday assured a high-level probe after protests broke out late at night at the Chandigarh University amid allegations that objectionable videos of girl students were shared online.
In a tweet, the chief minister wrote in Hindi: "Sad to hear about the incident at the Chandigarh University. Instructions have been given for a high-level probe. Whoever will be found guilty, action would be taken against them."
"I am in constant touch with officials concerned. I appeal to all of you to not pay heed to rumours," he added.
Urging people not to pay any attention to any rumour, SSP Soni said no case of attempted suicide by any woman student came to notice. He also said no death took place in connection with the incident.
To another question, Soni said forensic evidence was being collected in the matter.
Punjab State Women Commission Chairperson Manisha Gulati also reached the university campus to take stock of the situation.
"I understand parents' concern and I want to assure them that the incident is being investigated by the police," she said.
"It is a matter of deep investigation why the woman, who made the video, did so. Whether or not she shot videos of other girls is a matter of investigation," Gulati said.
Hundreds of students hit the street on Saturday night after the chaos erupted on the campus. Several social media posts are doing the rounds claiming that the university authorities were trying to put a lid on the entire issue.
