Maoists killed a 38-year-old man in tribal-dominated Nabarangpur district in southern Odisha for cutting down trees and helping the administration to set up new villages.

P.K. Nayak, inspector in charge of Raighar police station under which Nabarangpur falls, told The Telegraph: “The Maoists killed Nayaran Nagesh on Friday night. We recovered the body on Saturday morning and sent it for post-mortem.”

Nagesh was shot in the chest from a close range.

“We have seized some leaflets near the body. The Maoists accused him of felling trees in order to set up villages and create agricultural land for the people,” Nayak said.

In the leaflet, the Maoists also mentioned how Nagesh was involved in such activities since 2010 despite being warned. “Nagesh was punished for his activities,” the leaflet stated.

A fortnight back, the Maoists killed 35-year-old Chandan Mallick for suspecting him to be a police informer. However, the police denied that charge.

The family members of the deceased will get Rs 8 lakh as compensation.
