Family feud was the reason behind the murder, said the police.

The village falls under the Mahanga police station area in Cuttack district.

The victims have been identified as Alekh Sahu, 48, Sahu’s wife Rasmi Rekha, 41, daughter Smruti Sandya, 19, two sons Smruti Sai, 12 and Smruti Saurav, 12.

Cuttack rural superintendent of police (SP) Jugal Kishore Banoth told reporters: “The accused is in police

custody. He used a sharp weapon (pickaxe) to kill all the five. We have seized the murder weapon. Investigation is on.”

Before surrendering to the police, Siba made a video on his mobile phone and explained the reason behind his killing spree. Later, he circulated the video among the villagers.

“I do have a bitter relationship with my brother. My elder brother and his family had been torturing me since long.

“Last night, my elder brother and his family members had beaten me badly. After being thrashed, I lost my mental balance and killed all of them one by one. I am going to surrender before the police. I will accept the punishment as per the provision of the law,” Siba, who works as a driver, said in the video.
