A Mahila Morcha office-bearer of the BJP has filed a molestation and intimidation case against her party president of Balkeshwar division in Agra.

Identified as Giriraj Bansal, the accused has resigned from the post but claimed innocence.

The Mahila Morcha office-bearer said she filed the report after realising that the leader would harass other women members if he remained in the party. The police said a case was registered on Monday based on her complaint and an inquiry has been initiated.

The victim said the incident occurred at an election meeting held at the BJP office in Balkeshwar on April 29.

“As my house is near the office, I went to make tea for the members after the meeting. Bansal followed me to my house and tried to molest me. I was alone. I pushed him away and picked up a lathi to threaten him. He left the house verbally abusing me and threatening to kill me,” a police source and local reporters quoted her as saying.

“I remained silent for several days because I didn’t want to drag the party into this controversy but realised that he would do the same with other women members of the BJP if he remained in the organisation.

“A senior party leader initially forced the police not to file the case. Some leaders tried for truce between us in a closed-door meeting. He tendered his apology to me but I decided not to suppress the incident. Maybe he has resigned from his post but I want the party to suspend him and the police to take action against him,” she added.

Hemant Kumar, the additional commissioner of police of Chatta, said: “We have registered a case under several sections and are collecting evidence. Action will be taken against the accused once the inquiry is complete.”

Agra BJP Mahanagar president Bhanu Mahajan said: “We have accepted Bansal’s resignation.”

Bansal, however, claimed that the allegations were baseless. “I am a dedicated party worker for the last 32 years,” he said.
