Maharashtra, Jharkhand polls in November, Election Commission announces dates

Maharashtra will vote in a single phase on November 20 and Jharkhand in two phases on November 13 and 20

The Election Commission on Tuesday announced Assembly polls in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, as well as bypolls to 48 Assembly seats and two parliamentary constituencies in 15 states.

Maharashtra will vote in a single phase on November 20 and Jharkhand in
two phases on November 13 and 20.

Bypolls to 47 Assembly seats in Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Uttar Pradesh and Bengal, as well as the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in Kerala vacated by the Congress’s Rahul Gandhi, are scheduled for November 13.

The Nanded parliamentary seat in Maharashtra and Kedarnath in Uttarakhand will vote on November 20.

In Bengal, Assembly bypolls will take place in Sitai, Madarihat, Naihati, Haroa and Taldangra.

Counting for all seats is set to take place on November 23.

The dates for the bypolls to the Basirhat Lok Sabha seat and the Assembly constituencies of Milkipur in Uttar Pradesh, Visavadar in Gujarat and Kerala’s Devikulam were not announced because of pending litigation.

Chief election commissioner Rajiv Kumar expressed concern over “urban apathy” in voting and appealed to the residents of such areas to cast their ballots.
