Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has carried out a cabinet shuffle that suggests some leaders who stood up to the BJP in the Lok Sabha polls have been rewarded and others punished.
Among those who have been given additional portfolios include Suvendu Adhikari, Bratya Basu, Soumen Mahapatra and Rajib Banerjee. These leaders have ensured a good performance of Trinamul candidates in areas under their charge.
Binoy Burman and Santiram Mahato have become ministers without portfolio. Trinamul had done badly in their districts The reward for some others suggests an attempt at ring-fencing in the season of defections.
