A letter petition has been sent to Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana by Mumbai-based lawyer Amritpal Singh Khalsa seeking a court-monitored probe into Saturday’s clash in northwest Delhi’s Jahangirpuri area.
Quoting news reports, the letter has claimed that certain armed persons forming a part of the Hanuman Jayanti procession had entered a mosque and installed a saffron flag resulting in the communal violence.
“The recent riots which erupted in Jahangirpuri area in North-West Delhi are a scar on the face of the Constitution. This is the second time that riots have erupted in Delhi in two years...,” the letter said.
The letter said seven to eight Delhi police personnel and civilians were severely injured and “damage to private property was fait acompli”.
These riots are already a communal scar, to make it even worse, Delhi police, initially arrested seven youths, all of them being Muslims, it said.
“With this letter I beseech your lordships attention in exercising epistolary jurisdiction, thereby constituting a committee headed by Sitting judge of this Court, to conduct impartial probe into Jahangirpuri riots,” the letter pleaded.
