Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad underwent a successful kidney transplant at a hospital in Singapore, his son and Bihar deputy chief minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav announced on Twitter on Monday.
“Papa was shifted from the operation theatre to the ICU after a successful kidney transplant operation. The donor, elder sister Rohini Acharya, and the RJD president, both are healthy. Thanks to prayers and good wishes of you all,” Tejashwi tweeted in Hindi in the afternoon.
Tejashwi also posted a video that showed Lalu being wheeled out on a bed from the operation theatre to the ICU of Mount Elizabeth Hospital.
Tejashwi, his mother and former chief minister Rabri Devi, eldest sister and Rajya Sabha member Misa Bharti were present at the hospital during the surgery. RJD national general secretary and Lalu’s Man Friday Bhola Yadav was also there. They met Lalu after he regained consciousness.
Misa posted a video in which Lalu is seen waving from the hospital bed. “It was a very comforting moment for us when we got permission to meet papa (Lalu) in the ICU for some time. He waved his hand to accept the good wishes of all of you (the public) and express gratitude,” Misa tweeted along with the video.
Lalu and Rohini were admitted to the hospital on Sunday. Pre-surgery tests were conducted on them and they were declared fit to undergo the medical processes.
RJD leaders, workers and supporters organised prayers in temples, mosques and gurdwaras across Bihar for Lalu’s well-being.
Lalu’s eldest son and Bihar environment and forest minister Tej Pratap Yadav performed special rituals and prayed to Lord Shiva for his speedy recovery.
