Top wrestlers Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat are on Wednesday likely to attend a khap mahapanchayat in Haryana that has been called “in the light of the cruelty of the Modi government towards women wrestlers”.

The meeting will be held in Balali, the home village of Vinesh and the other Phogat sisters, made famous by the film Dangal.

Sources said the mahapanchayat, which will be led by farmer leaders, will chalk out the future course of the protest against Wrestling Federation of India chief and BJP parliamentarian Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, accused of sexually harassing women wrestlers.

The heads of various khaps from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab are expected to attend the mahapanchayat.

“The entire framework of the protest will be decided by the khap leaders during the meeting. The Centre has shown enough cruelty towards the women wrestlers who have been demanding the immediate arrest of Singh,” a farmer leader said.

A khap mahapanchayat led by farmer leader Rakesh Tikait at Kurukshetra, Haryana, on June 2 had issued an ultimatum to the Narendra Modi government to arrest Singh by June 9. Else, the khap leaders said, they would March to Jantar Mantar in Delhi with the protesting wrestlers.

Singh has denied all the allegations against him.
