An award-winning Malayalam actor is the latest to come under the wheels of cyber bullies for speaking out against the RSS-BJP.
Vinayakan, a Left-leaning film personality like many others in the Malayalam movie industry, said during an interview with a TV channel that the RSS agenda would not work in Kerala. He said the dismal show by the Left Democratic Front in the Lok Sabha polls needed to be examined.
“The people of Kerala should introspect about what went wrong in the state,” he told the Media One channel in the interview that focused on the LDF’s debacle.
The LDF won just one of the 20 seats, with the Congress-led United Democratic Front bagging the rest. The BJP could not open its account, continuing a trend in Kerala that has never sent a member of the party to Parliament, although it had hoped to harvest dividends from the Sabarimala agitation this time.
Asked about the BJP’s chances in Kerala, Vinayakan said: “They won’t be able to do anything in Kerala. We are smart people. Didn’t we see that in this election?”
Vinayakan, known for his meaty roles, added: “I have my politics and I question everything. But my job is only to act in films.”
Immediately after the actor posted a video of the interview on Facebook on Thursday night, he came under vicious trolling.
Many posted pictures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Vinayakan’s Facebook wall, while others threatened not to watch his movies.
“Don’t try to play with RSS. It will be too much for you,” warned one Vishnu Anilkumar.
“I didn’t know that you were a… Commie scoundrel. From now on I will never watch your movies,” commented Srijith Karthikeyan.
“Modi didn’t step into Parliament with your vote. You can show your gratitude to those who throw some waste at you. Don’t try to play with us,” wrote Sreejith Vallamkal.
The threat to boycott Vinayakan’s films comes at a time his latest outing, Thottappan, is slated for release on August 9.
The actor registered a rather unique protest on Saturday night by replacing his cover photo and profile picture on Facebook with pictures of Lord Ayyappan, the deity of the Sabarimala temple, and Goddess Kali, respectively.
Of late, actors have been easy targets for cyber trolls in Kerala. The intensity of the attack is usually dictated by whether one is from the Left or the Right.
Prominent Malayalam filmmakers such as Ashiq Abu, Amal Neerad and Rajeev Ravi often get attacked for their closeness to the LDF.
Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi was another victim of Right-wing trolls who called him a “Commie” and asked him to mind his own business after he supported Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan over the Sabarimala issue.
The Sangh parivar had launched an agitation against the Left government’s decision to implement the September 2018 Supreme Court order allowing women of all ages into the Sabarimala hill shrine.
While the BJP had initially welcomed the judgment, it changed its position sensing a political opportunity in Kerala.
During a shoot in Kerala in February, Sethupathi had backed Vijayan. “The chief minister is right on Sabarimala. I don’t understand why there is so much of ruckus over this,” the actor had said.
Sangh parivar cyber trolls immediately flooded his Facebook page with abuses.
