Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal asked permission from the Centre on Tuesday to impose lockdowns in market areas susceptible to become Covid-19 hotspots. He also decided to revoke an order allowing 200 people to attend wedding ceremonies.

The chief minister, while addressing an online press briefing, informed that the AAP government had sent a proposal to Delhi Lt Governor Anil Baijal to permit only 50 guests at wedding functions,as opposed to the earlier 200-guests limit.

He said that every agency as well as the Centre are making “double efforts” to curb the Covid-19 situation in Delhi.

"We are sending a proposal to the Centre to give power to the Delhi government to impose lockdown in market areas which may emerge as COVID-19 hotspots," Kejriwal said.

With folded hands, the chief minister appealed to the citizens to follow social distancing norms and wear masks, while also thanking the central government for assisting Delhiites in “such difficult times”.

The national capital has witnessed a sudden spike in the number of Covid-19 cases since October 28 when the daily number breaked the 5,000-mark for the first time. On Wednesday, Delhi recorded more than 8,000 cases of Covid-19 in a single day.

A total of 104 deaths related to the infection were recorded on Thursday, making it the highest in over five months.
