The Supreme Court will take up on Tuesday the Karnataka State Wakf Board appeal challenging the state high court’s order permitting the government to take decisions on the use of the Idgah Maidan land at Chamarajepet, Bangalore, for this year’s nine-day Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations starting from August 31.
A bench of Chief Justice U.U. Lalit and Justice S. Ravindra Bhat assured senior advocate Kapil Sibal during the morning mentioning time for urgent listing citing.
Sibal pleaded that the matter be heard urgently on Tuesday as it would to create “unnecessary religious tensions”. He said the land is being traditionally used by Muslims to perform certain rituals during Ramazan and Id for the past six decades.
The bench then passed the following order: “Subject to removal of defects if any during the course of the day, list the matter on 30.08.2022 before an appropriate bench.”
The Wakf Board has challenged an August 26 order permitting the state and the Brihat Bengaluru Mahanagar to use the Idgah Maidan for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.
