The Jammu and Kashmir government on Thursday appeared to have brought about some degree of parity among the dead. Bereaved Dalit families had alleged discrimination in the ex gratia announced by the government after members of Dalit and Brahmin communities were killed in purported militant attacks in Jammu’s Rajouri district.

Koshal Vishwa, brother of one of the two Dalit victims, said Rajouri deputy commissioner Vikas Kundal on Thursday visited their homes and handed cheques for an additional Rs 4 lakh each.

“Earlier, we were given Rs 6 lakh each,” Vishwa said. The extra amount brings the ex gratia on a par with the Rs 10 lakh given to each Brahmin family. Deputy commissioner Kundal could not be contacted for corroboration. Nothing was said about jobs, Vishwa said. The process to give jobs to the Brahmin families has already started. The pleas of Muslim families who alleged bias remain unanswered.
