An award-winning boxer from Jammu, who is employed with Jammu and Kashmir police, has alleged that he was subjected to “third-degree torture” at a police station in his home district Poonch.

“I was given around 200 electric shocks using a Taser gun in the lock-up in Poonch police station. They rained lathis on me and showed no mercy even when I kept telling them I am from the police too,” Jagvinder Singh told The Telegraph.

“I have been serving in the police for more than two decades. I have won eight medals in boxing at the national level, including a silver at senior nationals. I also worked as a boxing coach in Jammu and Kashmir police for three years,” he said.

“I am posted in Pattan (in Kashmir) and recently returned to Poonch as my mother is not keeping well. Look how they treated me.”

Pictures and a video showing marks of torture on Singh’s body have surfaced on social media.

Jammu District Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee addressed a media conference on Monday to seek justice for Singh.

“According to the information, Jagvinder Singh had gone to the market to buy medicine for his mother who is suffering from dementia. On his way back, there was a scuffle between two groups unknown to him,” Balvinder Singh, vice-president of DGPC, said.

“The SHO confronted him and enquired why he was standing there. Singh said his house was in the vicinity.... He was manhandled and dragged to the police station.”

Singh said the officers were offended when he told them “not to push him”. “They dragged me by my hair....”

Singh said the police refused to lodge a complaint.
