Addressing media a day after the rumpus on the campus in which as many as 200 students were injured at the hands of police, Jamia Millia Islamia vice chancellor Najma Akhtar has said that she would request the government to conduct an inquiry into Sunday’s police action on campus that injured several students.

Addressing the media on Monday, Akhtar said that the university would not tolerate unauthorised entry of police inside the campus and asked who would account for the mental stress inflicted upon students.

'We will also request a high level inquiry into the matter with the ministry. Does it happen in other universities also, that police can enter without permission? Our students were beaten up in the library… they were only studying there. This is not acceptable,' the VC said.

There have been claims and counter-claims about Sunday’s police high-handedness.

The trigger appeared to be the torching of vehicles outside the campus in the afternoon. The varsity said in a statement its students were not responsible for the arson that may have been carried out by protesters in the neighbourhood.

It is being alleged that the police wanted to teach a lesson to the students — who have been protesting for the past few days against the new citizenship law — and entered the campus and the situation spun out of control.

The police, who have blamed violence by the students for the crackdown, are facing explosive allegations, including an attack on a place of worship and an attempt to pick out “Kashmiri-looking” students and herd them into a room.

So far, the Union HRD ministry which governs all central universities, has not spoken on the issue.

The VC appealed to people to not believe in rumors and not spread them. She denied that any student died during Sunday’s violence, but said 200 were injured.

'There's been a great loss, who will compensate for that? And what about our emotional loss, our confidence loss? The bad impact on students psyche? Who will be responsible for that? Ten thousand people are running on the road and you chase 10 inside the campus?' she said.
