Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Wednesday said the Indian government should adopt a fair policy towards the people of Kashmir, his comments coming hours after US President Donald Trump said he “will do the best I can to mediate” between India and Pakistan on the issue.

According to a report by the Tasnim News Agency, which is affiliated to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, the Ayatollah said this at a meeting with the Iran President and cabinet members.

“We have good relations with the government of India, but the Indian government is expected to adopt a fair policy towards the noble people of Kashmir, so that this region’s Muslim people would not be oppressed,” the Ayatollah was quoted as saying.

New Delhi did not react to the Ayatollah’s comment. Despite repeated queries from journalists, the external affairs ministry did not react to Trump’s remarks, either, that seek to position the US in a mediator’s role — something India has always resisted and Pakistan favours.

“So, you know, I think we’re helping the situation. But there’s tremendous problems between those two countries. And I will do the best I can to mediate or do something. Great relationship with both of them,” Trump said at the White House on Tuesday.

When Trump had on July 23 claimed that Modi had asked him to mediate on Kashmir, India had denied such a conversation took place.

“I’m going to be with Prime Minister Modi. I’ll be with him over the weekend in France,” Trump said at the White House on Tuesday. “Pakistan Prime Minister (Imran) Khan was here just recently. I get along really well with both of them.”

Although India has not yet confirmed a bilateral meeting between Modi and Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Biarritz, France, this weekend, the US President’s comments suggest the possibility of a meeting.

“Frankly, it’s a very explosive situation. I spoke to Prime Minister Khan yesterday, also with Prime Minister Modi. They’re both friends of mine. They’re great people. They’re great people, and they love their country,” Trump added.

Trump had spoken to Modi and Imran back to back on Monday evening, even communicating to the Pakistan Prime Minister the need to moderate the rhetoric. Modi had told the US President the shrill rhetoric coming out of Pakistan was escalating tensions.

Trump described the Kashmir issue as a Hindu-Muslim one. “Kashmir is a very complicated place. You have the Hindus and you have the Muslims and I wouldn’t say they get along so great and that’s what you have right now,” he said.
