Two suspected militants were killed after the army foiled an infiltration bid in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Friday.
“An Infiltration bid on LoC has been foiled by alert troops in the morning hours today, when terrorists were trying to infiltrate through Sabura Nala, Uri Sector,” the army said in a statement.
The army initially said one militant was killed. Sources said the second militant was killed during the course of the operation.
According to sources, the security forces noticed the movement of two to three militants in the wee hours. The militants opened fire on being challenged, leading to a gunfight that was still underway till the last report came in.
This is the first infiltration bid by militants this year. The last infiltration bid had taken place on the Kashmir borders in November when two militants were killed.
Infiltration bids and gunfights have come down sharply in the Valley.
The GoC of the 15 corps, Rajiv Ghai, had recently visited the Line of Control to review the army’s operational preparedness.
Last week, BSF inspector-general (Kashmir Frontier) Ashok Yadav told reporters that infiltration attempts across the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir would likely increase as the snow melts.
A Central Reserve Police Force soldier allegedly shot himself dead with his service rifle in Baramulla on Friday.
The jawan was posted in the 92 battalion of the CRPF.
