Delhi police’s crime branch has arrested an Indian Air Force jawan on the charge of spying for Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

“A preliminary probe has revealed that the suspect was honey-trapped by a stranger who allegedly collected sensitive information from him. Pakistan’s ISI is alleged to be behind the espionage,” a police officer said.

The jawan, identified as Devendra Kumar Sharma, works at the air force records office in Delhi’s Subroto Park.

“Sharma allegedly leaked information about defence installations, positions of IAF radars and posting details of senior IAF officers after deceitfully getting the information from computers and other files. He is alleged to have leaked information to an agent of an adversary country and also received money for that,” the police officer said.

Sharma is being interrogated about the nature of other information he may have shared and to unearth the roots of the alleged conspiracy. A case under the Official Secrets Act has been registered against him.

According to the police, Sharma, who was arrested from Delhi’s Dhaula Kuan area, had met a woman on Facebook. The woman befriended him and frequently called him to get sensitive information.

Police sources said intelligence agencies had been regularly warning central government departments about “honey traps” set by foreign agencies to target officers engaged in dealing with sensitive information on national security.

According to an intelligence official, foreign intelligence agencies are suspected to be using English- and Urdu-speaking women to trap Indian officers through social media. The women, who mostly operate on porn sites, trap vulnerable officers and indulge in sex chats. In some cases they send friend requests to officers on Facebook and exchange numbers and start chatting through Chinese smartphones and then blackmail them for classified information.
