India on Wednesday confirmed the death of one Indian in Russia from the batch that had travelled there to work as helpers in the Russian army but were forced into fighting against Ukraine.
The death of Hyderabad-based Mohammed Asfan was announced by the Indian embassy in Moscow via a post on X but no details were provided on the circumstances that led to his death.
“We have learnt about the tragic death of an Indian national, Shri Mohammed Asfan. We are in touch with the family and Russian authorities. Mission will make efforts to send his mortal remains to India," the embassy said in the post.
Earlier in the day, another video of seven Indians who claimed they were being forced to fight for the Russian army surfaced. In the video, recorded in Punjabi, the seven are dressed in olive-coloured uniforms and the recording was made in a small room.
They claim to have entered Russia on a tourist visa and said they were forced by the police to fight for the Russian army as they did not possess a “slip”, which they were not aware of. This group appears to be different from the earlier batch of about 20 Indians who were reported to have reached out to the embassy for help after being taken to Russia on the promise of employment in the army as helpers. A couple of them said they were given some basic training and made to fight on the frontier with Ukraine.
