The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, Jamia Millia Islamia university, Indian Medical Association, Oxfam India and the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library are among 5,789 entities whose Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act registration certificates are deemed to have ceased.

FCRA registration is mandatory for any association or non-profit to receive foreign funds.

Officials said the FCRA licences of 18,778 organisations were to expire between September 29, 2020, and December 31, 2021. Of these, 12,989 organisations had applied for renewal. Since 5,789 organisations did not apply for renewal of the FCRA licence, they were deemed to have ceased to be registered organisations on January 1, an official said.

Rule 12 requires the submission of renewal applications six months before the date of expiry of the certification.

The renewal applications of a total of 179 organisations have been rejected for various reasons, officials said.

According to the FCRA website, among the organisations whose registration ceased or licence validity expired were the India Habitat Centre, Lady Shri Ram College for Women and Delhi College of Engineering, the Medical Council of India, Emmanuel Hospital Association, which runs over a dozen hospitals across India, the Tuberculosis Association of India and Vishwa Dharmayatan.

The Maharishi Ayurveda Pratishthan, National Federation of Fishermen’s Cooperatives Ltd, Hamdard Education Society, Delhi School of Social Work Society, Bhartiya Parishad, DAV College Trust and Management Society, India Islamic Cultural Centre, Godrej Memorial Trust, The Delhi Public School Society, the Nuclear Science Centre at JNU and the All India Marwari Yuva Manch also figure on the list.

As do the Indira Gandhi National Centre For Arts, Indian Institute of Public Administration and the Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial Foundation.

There were 22,762 FCRA-registered organisations in the country till Friday. On Saturday, that number came down below 17,000. These are considered “live” organisations.

The Union home ministry on Friday extended by three months the validity of the FCRA registration certificates of many organisations.
