A deputy superintendent of police investigating illegal stone mining was killed on Tuesday when a truck he had signalled to stop in Haryana’s Nuh district drove into him, officials said, hours after which the suspected driver was shot at by cops during an exchange of bullets.

Tauru DSP Surendra Singh had signalled the dumper-truck to halt around 11.50am to check documents during a raid to stop illegal mining on the Aravalli hills in the Pachgaon area. But the driver allegedly sped on, running him over.

The officer’s gunman and driver jumped aside to safety. Singh was rushed to hospital where doctors declared him dead, the police said.

Hours later, the police shot at and injured a man believed to be the truck driver.

The man, whose identity the police are yet to reveal, was injured in an encounter with police teams deployed to trace the vehicle and its driver, cops said.

An officer said there was an exchange of fire in which the man was injured and was taken to hospital. His condition was not immediately known.

DSP Singh was recruited as an assistant sub-inspector in the Haryana police in 1994 and was to retire in a few months.

Singh lived with his family in Kurukshetra and hailed from Sarangpur village of Hisar district.

Since 2015, about 50 complaints of illegal mining are registered every year in Nuh, officials said. Often, there are run-ins between the police and the mining mafia.
