Polls for the main executive body of the mammoth Municipal Corporation of Delhi were stalled, after a night of pandemonium in which BJP and AAP members exchanged sundry missiles.

The House is scheduled to reconvene on Friday to complete the polls in which the BJP may have an edge.

AAP unseated the BJP in the MCD after 15 years in December last year.

A contest between the two to allegedly poach councillors immediately followed. Polls for executive positions by the electoral college were stalled thrice after protests by AAP members against Delhi’s lieutenant governor nominating aldermen of his choice and appointing a presiding officer from the BJP who included these aldermen in the electoral college.

This was struck down by the Supreme Court last week. The court ordered polls for mayor, deputy mayor and the standing committee — which performs the day-to-day governance of the MCD — to be held on the same day. AAP’s Shelly Oberoi and Aaley Mohammad Iqbal were elected mayor and deputy mayor on Wednesday.

For the election of the standing committee members, Oberoi said mobile phones would be allowed inside the voting compartment, which the BJP objected to on the ground that it compromises the secret ballot.

Both parties have claimed their members were assaulted by the opposing side. BJP members were seen throwing a ballot box. The session was finally adjourned at 10am.
