The All Assam Gorkha Students Union’s Kamrup district unit protested in front of the Boko circle office in lower Assam’s Kamrup district on Tuesday against the exclusion of more than one lakh Gorkhas from the final National Register of Citizen.
The protesters also included members of the Assam Gorkha Sanmilan, Kamrup Zila Gorkha Kalyan Samittee, Assam Nepali Sahitya Sabha and the Gorkha Mahila Sanmilan Samittee.
Kamrup Zila Gorkha Kalyan Samittee president Arjun Chetry alleged that more than one lakh Gorkhas in Assam, of them 1,100 from south Kamrup, had been left out of the NRC because of the negligence of NRC state co-ordinator Prateek Hajela and staffers.
He said lack of proper documents and education was also responsible for the exclusions. Since the beginning of the NRC update process they have been submitting memoranda to the government, requesting help for the “poor and uneducated” Gorkhas, Chetry added. But the government never paid heed to the pleas, he alleged.
Chetry demanded that the names of these Gorkhas be included in the NRC without them having to appear before foreigners tribunals.
