Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday questioned the “continuing silence” of the Narendra Modi government on calls for genocide of Muslims in India and urged the international community to take note and act.

A fortnight after Pakistan foreign office summoned the Indian Charge d’Affaires in Islamabad on the genocide calls, Khan on Monday posted two tweets on the issue.

“The continuing silence of Modi govt on the call at an extremist Hindutva summit in Dec for genocide of minorities in India, especially the 200mn Muslim community, begs the question whether the BJP govt supports this call. It is high time international community took note & acted.”

“Under the extremist ideology of the BJP Modi govt, all religious minorities in India have been targeted with impunity by Hindutva groups. The extremist agenda of the Modi govt is a real and present threat to peace in our region,” he said in the second tweet.

Till late in the evening, India did not comment on the Pakistan Prime Minister’s remarks, both on and off record.

When the Indian diplomat was summoned a fortnight ago on the same issue, India also chose silence over the usually sharp reactions to such comments from Islamabad.

The Indian diplomat was told that “it was highly reprehensible that the Hindu Raksha Sena’s Prabodhanand Giri and other Hindutva figures who called for ethnic cleansing have neither expressed any regret nor the Indian government has condemned or taken any action against them so far”.

Pakistan had also sought to remind India that such incitement to violence by Hindutva figures, including the ruling party’s elected members, preceded the Delhi riots of February 2020.

In the past, whenever Pakistan has made such comments on communalism in India, New Delhi’s response has been to remind Islamabad of its own track record vis-à-vis minorities.
