AAP's East Delhi candidate Atishi today alleged that BJP candidate Gautam Gambhir possessed two EPIC cards, which means that the former cricketer could be a voter from two constituencies.

Atishi appealed to the electorate in East Delhi in a tweet, telling them to not waste their vote by voting Gambhir. “He is going to get disqualified sooner or later for having two Voter ID cards!' she wrote. She also attached two screenshots of showing two voter ID cards of one or two persons called 'Gautam Gambhir'. Deepak Gambhir is the father of the voter in both cases. One EPIC is registered in Karol Bagh, the other in Rajinder Nagar.

Under Section 17 of The Representation of the People Act, 1950, Gambhir can’t be a voter in two places. “No person shall be entitled to be registered in the electoral rolls for more than one constituency,” reads the act.

Section 31 of the Act also gives the quantum of punishment for any kind of false declaration. “He shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine, or with both,” the section says.

Gambhir is the BJP's East Delhi candidate.

On April 25, Atishi registered a criminal complaint in the Tis Hazari Courts seeking direction for police investigation into offences under the Act. According to Gambhir’s affidavit submitted to the Returning Officer at the time of nomination, the 37-year-old is only registered to vote in the Assembly constituency Rajinder Nagar-39. AAP claims that Gambhir deliberately and wilfully concealed during the time of filing and scrutiny of his nomination that he was a voter from another constituency too.

When this website tried to contact Gambhir over phone, he refused to comment at the moment, saying someone from his team would get back later. His Chowkidar Gautam Gambhir Twitter handle had no response to Atishi's allegations.

AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal also tweeted that voters should not waste their vote on someone who will get disqualified soon. AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj also tweeted with the same appeal.
