A father and son duo from West Bengal drowned in Puri on Wednesday while taking a bath near Swargadwar.
The two tourists have been identified as Ranjan Das, 40, and his son Rishav Das, 16. Rishav completed his Madhyamik recently.
Another tourist, accompanying the two, who was taking a bath was rescued by the local lifeguard in a critical condition. The sea was rough because of the impact of a possible cyclone formation.
The local lifeguards deployed on the sea beach reportedly asked the tourists not to go deep inside the sea. However, the tourists entered the sea and were swept away by strong currents.
The lifeguards tried to save their lives but they failed to do so, locals told the reporters in Puri. Later, the bodies of the tourists were retrieved and taken to the district hospital.
Sources said a group of five tourists from Howrah in West Bengal had reached Puri on Tuesday morning and checked into a hotel. All of them went to the sea beach for a bath in the morning.
While two (father and son) were swept away by the current, three others were rescued. The tourist who was rescued by the lifeguard has been identified as Suny Sekar Mahata, 20.
