Farmers and their supporters participate in the Kisan Sansad at Jantar Mantar on Monday against the Centre’s three farm laws.

The anti-farm law protesters decided to pass a “no confidence motion” against the Centre and close the protest at Jantar Mantar, which was timed to coincide with the monsoon session of Parliament. An office-bearer of a participant peasants’ union said they would not seek permission from Delhi police to extend any further. Around 200 farmers have been participating in the daily protest since Parliament opened.

The Kisan Sansad called by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella body of farmer unions, at Jantar Mantar near Parliament decided to call for the resignation of the Narendra Modi government for not repealing the contentious farm laws.

The sit-in at Delhi’s borders against the three laws, which will complete nine months soon, will continue, an office-bearer of the Bharatiya Kisan Union, a part of the Morcha, said.

“The farmer unions through their ‘Kisan Sansad’ will pass a ‘no confidence motion’ for the government, demanding resignation of the BJP-led dispensation,” BKU media in-charge Dharmendra Malik said.

Delhi police had granted permission for the protest at Jantar Mantar from July 22 till August 9 with a maximum of 200 protesters at the site.

“We are not going to seek any further permission for the protest at Jantar Mantar because the government is just not concerned. We will pass the ‘no confidence motion’ against it and return to the (Delhi) borders where protest will continue until our demands are met,” Malik added.
