A large number of farmer groups broke through Delhi police’s barricades on Monday morning and joined the wrestlers’ protest at Jantar Mantar against the Wrestling Federation of India chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is facing sexual harassment allegations.

Visuals from Jantar Mantar showed farmers jumping over and removing barricades put up by the police near the wrestlers’ protest site. Delhi police, however, denied reports of any face-off between farmers and cops.

“A group of farmers were escorted to Jantar Mantar. At entry barricades, they were in a hurry to reach the dharna site in which some of them climbed the barricades which fell down and were removed by them. Police team kept the barricades at the back to facilitate their entry,” a tweet by DCP New Delhi’s official Twitter handle said.

The police insisted that there was no clash with the protesters and that the cops at the site were facilitating the protesters and ensuring a peaceful gathering.

“All are requested not to believe in fake news. The protesters at Jantar Mantar are being facilitated. Entry is being regulated through DFMD to ensure safety. Please remain peaceful and abide by the law,” a tweet by Delhi police’s official Twitter handle said.

Last week, Delhi police registered two FIRs against Singh following prodding by the Supreme Court after seven wrestlers, including a minor, filed multiple complaints against him. The first FIR pertained to allegations of a minor wrestler and was registered under the Pocso Act, while the second is based on the complaints of the women wrestlers alleging multiple incidents of sexual harassment and misconduct.

The police have so far not arrested Singh, saying an inquiry is on in the matter.
