An elephant trampled two elderly persons to death and injured two women in Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh on Wednesday morning. It was the first instance of an elephant attack in the city limits of Jharkhand.

Hazaribagh West divisional forest officer S.A. Ansari said that the tusker, aged nearly 10 years, has strayed away from the herd and has entered the city area.

“It is the same tusker which had strayed away from the herd in the adjoining Ramgarh forest area and also in Hazaribagh East forest area and has now entered Hazaribagh city. We are trying to drive it back to the forest,” said Ansari.

According to locals, the tusker trampled to death Damodar Sao, 66, and Dhaneshwar Sao, 67, both of whom were watering their vegetables in the field at Kumhartoli and Khirgaon Kali Temple area around 5.30am on Wednesday. Both of them died on the spot.

The elephant also injured two women Rinki Kumari, 23, and Pramila Kumari, 38.

While Rinki has been admitted to Hazaribagh hospital, the other woman has been referred to Rajendra Institute of Medical Science in Ranchi for better treatment. Irate residents attempted to block the Hazaribagh-Chatra Road to protest the death but were pacified by the Hazaribagh Sadar circle officer Rajesh Kumar.

Rs 1.1 crore job offer for XLRI student
