A government doctor has been sacked in Karnataka for allegedly using an operation theatre for his pre-wedding shoot, amid the trend of filming for social media at all kinds of places.

Elsewhere in the state, 38 junior doctors and medical students have been handed 10-day suspensions after a video purportedly showed them dancing inside a hospital’s corridors and rooms.

A video clip circulated on social media purportedly shows Dr Abhishek performing mock surgery on a man in the OT while his fiancée “assists” him as a nurse would. The doctor, posted at the Bharamasagar Government Hospital in Chitradurga, was sacked on Friday.

The same day, the Gadag Institute of Medical Sciences in Gadag, some 400km from here, suspended 38 medical students and junior doctors, both men and women. Most of the junior doctors are doing their housemanship.

A video purportedly shows the group dancing in corridors and inside rooms, with various hospital equipment all around them.

State health minister Dinesh Gundu Rao shared on the X platform the sack order on Dr Abhishek, issued by the Chitradurga district administration.

“A doctor who conducted a pre-wedding shoot in the operation theatre of Bharamasagar Government Hospital in Chitradurga has been dismissed from service,” he wrote.

“Government hospitals exist for the health care of people and not for personal work. I cannot tolerate such indiscipline from doctors.”

In the OT video, a man and a woman are seen in dark blue scrubs (medical clothing). A scalpel in hand, the man pretends to perform surgery on the abdomen of a male patient while the woman mops sweat from the doctor’s brow.

Two cameramen, aided by a light boy, film the “surgery” while another man is seen in the video, which must have been shot by an eighth person.

During the act, the woman breaks into laughter, prompting the man performing mock surgery and the others to join in. The “patient” then sits up.

Dr Abhishek could not be reached for comments; he stayed away from local
reporters, too.

At the Gadag medical college, the dancing shoot was apparently held to celebrate the impending graduation of the students among the dancers.
