The Centre on Thursday urged Canada to designate as terrorists under Canadian law individuals and entities who have already been declared as terrorists under Indian law ahead of the second phase of the “Khalistan Referendum” — scheduled to be held in Toronto on Sunday.

While acknowledging the fact that the government of Canada has conveyed to New Delhi that it will not recognise the “so-called referendum”, external affairs ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi iterated that India finds it “deeply objectionable that politically motivated exercises by extremist elements are allowed to take place in a friendly country”.

Bagchi said those already designated as terrorists by India should be treated in the same way by Canada. He did not provide any names. Sikhs for Justice, the organisation that has called for the “Khalistan Referendum”, was banned by India in July 2019.
