Delhi police have provided security to suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and her family after she complained of threats over her derogatory remarks on Prophet Mohammed, sources said on Tuesday.
The move came as Maharashtra police formally asked Sharma to appear before them on June 22 to record her statement in connection with an FIR lodged against her on her comments on the Prophet. The charges include IPC sections dealing with deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings and promoting enmity between groups.
There have been growing calls for Sharma’s arrest for insulting religious sentiments and incitement.
“Acting on Sharma’s request, we have provided security to her and her family. She alleged that she had been getting death threats,” a Delhi police officer said.
Delhi police had registered an FIR against unknown persons over complaints from Sharma that she was receiving threat calls.
