The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Saturday unveiled its first indigenous light tank called Zorawar, which has been designed to meet the Indian Army’s requirements along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh amid the ongoing border standoff with China.
The light tanks, jointly developed by DRDO and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Limited, are expected to be ready for induction into the army by 2027. Sources said the tank has completed the track trials at L&T’s engineering plant in Gujarat.
“The tanks will undergo a series of trials in deserts and high-altitude areas to test their capability over the next two to three years before they are finally inducted. These indigenous light tanks are built for quicker deployment and movement in high-altitude areas,” said a defence ministry official.
He said these tanks will bolster the army’s overall firepower and operational prowess to deal with any eventualities along the China frontier.
